House Refurbishing – Milano

It is a project of refurbishing and restoration of a flat on two levels, located on the top floors of an elegant Art Nouveau condominium in the heart of Milan. A building of this type required a series of reflections on how to introduce the contemporary in a historic space, developing tactics of coexistence between old design and new layout.

The theme of the intervention, as often happens in situations of this kind, is the search for a balanced and proportionate strategy to transform a twentieth-century space into a contemporary machiné à habiter. To do this, it was decided to empty the first level of the existing partition, remodelling it by inserting a sequence of boxes-rooms that rhythm the space without ever closing it. The circular living room, located on the corner tower, has instead been recovered in its splendour of light, like a kaleidoscopic panoptic over the city.
One of the room-boxes houses the bar cabinet with mirrored doors, designed following a suggestion reminiscent of the glittered bars of the jazz age. The large windows in the living room and dining room surround the teak-clad terrace in a luminous embrace, set back from the façade so that it looks more like a special room inside the house than an outside space.
