Al Janoub Stadium was the first new stadium commissioned for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, inaugurated on 16 May 2019 by hosting the Amir Final Cup of the Qatar Stars national football league. Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) together with Aecom began designing the stadium along with its new precinct, so it can be considered the heart of a new stunning urban extension.

The design of Al Janoub Stadium is inspired by local culture and paying tribute to its peculiarities. In fact, the shape of the roof reminds to that of upside-down dhow hulls, which are the typical Arab boats, while the inclined and tapered walls towards the top recall the triangular sails. The roof, built in EFTE and completely openable is based on a high podium, inside which the circulation routes are integrated (pedestrian for spectators and players, driveways for cars) and which will also host a covered market in the near future., the stadium is equipped with air conditioning system and cooled seats to make the structure usable even during the summer, when the hot humid climate makes practically impossible to remain in the open air. The Al Janoub can accommodate 40.000 spectators, the large number of seats is ideal for the world championship, but it is too high for local matches. For this reason, the architects have planned a system of removable stands which will be removed by reducing the capacity to 22.000 people, after 2022.
