ADORABLE UNEXPECTED

De Petrus Library

Container and content are both valuable. When a valuable architecture is converted back to the library it could not be otherwise. It happens in Vought, in the Netherlands, where the nineteenth-century Petruskerk has been transformed into De Petrus, a multifunctional space composed of a public library, a small museum, a shop and a bistro. The project was signed by Studio Molenaar & Bol & Vandillen Architects in the name of respect for the ancient church. The interventions, which provided for a general conservative restoration and the addition of a mezzanine plan that promotes internal circulation and gives an unprecedented perspective on the decorative apparatus and architectural details, are all easily reversible . The large space of the nave, now occupied by shelves full of volumes mounted on rails and reading tables, can be easily reconfigured to accommodate conventions or special events.
